Agents & Provocateurs

Agents & Provocateurs

Date

June 2023

Location

Narrowsburg, NY

The immersive performance "Agents & Provocateurs" conceived, written, and directed by Dasha Ziborova, was created for the Deep Water Literary Festival in Narrowsburg in 2023, which centered around an Orwellian theme.

The Russian writer Sergei Dovlatov once famously said: “We endlessly curse Comrade Stalin, and, of course, for the cause. And yet, I want to ask—who wrote the four million denunciations?”
"Agents & Provocateurs", based on George Orwell's "1984", invited the audience to participate in the sinister process of creating "denunciative drawings."
It commenced at Maison Bergogne in collaboration with Juliette Hermant, Luke Forbes, and Lyndsey Anderson with a performance and was then threaded throughout the day and town. Ziborova developed the scenario and narrative structure, designed and constructed five “Agent” costumes inspired by Stasi police uniforms, and created posters from original historical German, British, and Soviet-era newspapers, which were used for the set installation.
